During the New Imperialism, missionaries (catholic and protestant) went to Africa in order to win people over to Christianity. While there, they build churches, clinics, and schools while discouraging the slave trade. Then in the mid-1800s, a Frenchman got together a company to build a canal that would connect the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea in Egypt. It was called the Suez Canal, and it greatly cut the distance between sea routes, and therefore made transportation and trade much easier. In India, British rule brought a better legal system, railroads, and a telegraph and postal system.
