
In the early 1800's, European powers dominated Africa within 20 years. Although there was resistance, the Africans could not compete with the Maxim gun. Then, the Europeans began the slave trade, which was of course, cruel. Then, in Turkey, the genocide of a million Armenians occurred with the spread of nationalism. In India, the Sepoy Rebellion put India under British rule. Also, the opium war between Britain and China caused disruption in the Chinese economy.
It's hard not to let some of the time periods blur together. As you noted earlier, stopping the slave trade was a postive effect. However, here it states that they began the trade -- but that was in a much earlier era, so that's not really part of the NEW Imperialism as an era.
