The 17th Amendment (1913) began direct election of US Senators. Many states had already participated in primary elections for Senate members. Legislatures found it wise to listen to the people when choosing their Senators.

The 18th Amendment forbade alcohol in the US. Congress had forbidden the use of food products to make alcohol during WWI. The war spirit fueled the fight for prohibition (remember wet and dry states). Many alcoholic drinks were from Germany, their enemies.

The 19th Amendment (1920) gave all American women the right to vote.
