Nationalism: From Concert to Competition

Nationalism is a strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one's country. Nationalism emerged in the 19th century (so you could say that it is a 19th century "ism") in Europe, particularly in Germany and Italy. They came together because they had a lot in common, especially that they wanted to be independent and free.

Our puppet show was about Otto van Bismarck and his successes that he gained through using "Realpolitik" (I remember it by saying it is power before principals.) I think that my group did exceptionally well at entertaining the audience with our funny jokes and accents that we used with the characters. However, we also showed them how Bismarck used nationalism to the citizens pumped up for fighting against those that insulted them (the French). This genius changed a telegram from the french around to make it sound like an insult. However, maybe the way we entertained the people distracted them from learning the main point of the show.

The section that I studied most was the section that was about unifying Germany, however, the section about unifying Italy is very similar. Both of the countries before they were united were independent states that were similar in culture, and they were united under a leader that was a strong follower of Realpolitik. However, Germany was under a leader that kept the people together as the country of Germany unlike Italy. In Italy, the regional differences between the north and the south caused problems that kept them from solving national issues.

I think that nationalism is a great thing, especially if you wanted to unite a country like Afghanistan, because nationalism will bring their cultures and similarities together. I also think that nationalism could be used in countries that are already united help them solve their national problems like poverty and abortion by setting aside their personal issues in order to solve them effectively as a team. For example, the United States has been going down hill lately due to national issues occuring in several areas. If the citizens really want a change, than they are all going to have to chip in.
