Earth's geography has everything to do with the development of societies. Why are there super power countries like China and Britain and "3rd world countries" like Zambia and Zimbabwe? Well, if you ask Jared Diamond, he will tell you that in the history of the world, there have only been 14 domesticatable animals in the whole world. The thing is, 13 of them are native to the Eurasia region. The same thing applied with the plants. When farming was invented, crops such as wheat and barley from Eurasia prevailed over tara roots from Zambia. The Eurasian crops
were easily harvested with the 13/14 domesticatable animals, and they could be stored for much longer. This meant that Eurasians spent less time farming and more time doing things like building cities and inventing things.
Zimbabwe main crops include "corn, cotton, tobacco, wheat, coffee, sugarcane, and peanuts", according to CIA World Factbook. So my question is why is Zimbabwe so poverty stricken while other countries like the United States are prospering while using the same crops? To find out why, I researched Zimbabwe's first encounters with European colonizers, and I came up with a guy named Cecil Rhodes. Encyclopedia.com tells me that he set up the British South African Company in 1889. Therefore, the first encounter was about 120 years ago, which is when they got these crops to eat. This short time with crops good enough to last, and easy enough to farm is definitely not long to develope into a country like the US. Also, Zimbabwe has something slowing them down a lot: malaria. allAfrica.com states that malaria cases have gone from 136 to 93 cases per 1000 people in Zimbabwe from 2000 until 2
007. This is still a very large number, but cases are decreasing rapidly. I believe that one day this country will be like the US.
Although most ignorant people would think that this geogrphic luck is a bunch of BS, I have no doubt that this is what separates the 3rd world countries from the Superpowers like the US. I believe that trade and transportation will decrease global inequalities by letting countries have an easier time obtaining things that will help industrialize the countries. I do not think that there will every be total global inequality due to religious, cultural, and territorial wars. For example, a large factor contributing to the undevelopment of Afghanistan is the tribal wars that are tearing them apart instead of uniting them.
